Charles Justin Boyle
COTTONDALE - Major (Ret) Charles J. Boyle, born April 28, 1941, died of complications from cancer on May 27, 2023. He was 82 years old. Major Boyle was born in Conemaugh, PA and resided in Marion and Tuscaloosa, AL for the past 50 yearsafter a 21 year career in the U.S. Army Infantry. He retired from the Army in 1978 and served as a Senior Army Instructor of JROTC in high schoolsin Uniontown and Birmingham, AL and at ClintonHS in Clinton, LA until his full retirement in 2000. Major Boyle had a distinguished career as a soldier. He enlisted as a Private in the US Army in 1958,served tours of duty in Germany and Alaska andattained the rank of Staff Sergeant before enteringInfantry Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, GA in the fall of 1965. He subsequently led a Platoon and an Infantry Company in combatin Vietnam during 1967-68.
He was awarded the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for gallantry inaction and two Bronze stars for heroism in additionto the Purple Heart and numerous other awardsfor bravery and achievement. He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 25th Infantry Division during his combat tour. He was an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Marion Military Institute, Marion, AL from 1974 untilhis retirement in 1978. Major Boyle is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Boyle, his sisters Ruthie and Madeline, and his brother John Philip Boyle. He is survived by his sisters Nancy, Rose, and Dakotah (Patricia) Boyle and brother David H. Boyle.
Major Boyle was married to the love of his life, Beverly Ann Jagoda of Detroit, MI for over 30 years. They raised three children, Donald R. Boyle of Marion, AL (married to PaulaBoyle), daughters Jacqueline M. Boyle, and SandraJ. Sparks (married to Jeff Sparks) of Tuscaloosa, AL. Their grandchildren are Alisa Wilmuth (married to Robbie Wilmuth), Donald J. Boyle, Amy Thurber (married to Jonny Thurber) as well asgrandchildren Jillian, Mallory, Griffin, and Davis Sparks. They have four great-grandchildren, Baylee and Gary Wilmuth, and Lucas and Owen Thurber. Major Boyle was a devout member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tuscaloosa, AL. A funeral Mass will be held at 11am on June 9that the church, with visitation at 10am.
